CEOP response to Facebook announcement
Today's Facebook announcement is nothing more than we would expect from any responsible social network provider.
They have committed to improve the way they work with CEOP and the wider policing family and have devoted some of their online advertising space to work with a range of charities to run a safety campaign for young people, their parents and carers.
Whilst some of this is long overdue we welcome it nonetheless.
However the critical issues remains unresolved. We believe that without the deterrence provided by direct visible access to the CEOP button on each and every page children will not be appropriately empowered, parents cannot be reassured and the offender will not be deterred.
During yesterday’s constructive meeting with Facebook they did not say ‘no’ to the button. We are hopeful that, once they and their senior team in California have considered their position, they will take the critical final step to make their environment safer by adopting the direct CEOP link.
This position is supported by senior colleagues across the police service (view letter) and key partners from UK charities.
